Assurance of Salvation
by Pastor Lawrence DiNovo, 2001

It is important that all new believers realize that they are promised eternal life.  Jesus said in John 6:37, "...him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."
Anything God promises should never be doubted, yet invariably it is not uncommon that doubts arise.  The purpose of this lesson is to enlighten each new believer on the following:
I.     Where your doubts may come from
II.    The evidence of being a Christian
III.   That your salvation is secure in Jesus Christ

I.  Why Do We Doubt?
There are four possible reasons why a person may doubt their salvation.
1. DECEPTION BY THE DEVIL
It is possible that after accepting Christ as your Savior, that the devil will play with your mind and emotions.  If you ever doubt your salvation, go back to the time when God saved you.  Someone once said, "Never doubt in the dark what God has shown us in the light."

2. A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING THE PLAN OF SALVATION
In the event that the gospel was either not presented clearly or was not understood properly, it would not allow a person to make a proper decision.

3. AN INSINCERE DECISION
Insincerity is another reason why you might doubt your salvation.  It is possible that you may have had the gospel presented clearly, but you were not genuinely sincere about your repentance and commitment to Christ.  You went through the motions, but it was not from your heart.  Romans 10:9  says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

This doubt can be remedied simply by a "change of heart."  Once your salvation is settled through a sincere commitment to Jesus Christ, you are safe and secure eternally.  Never again will you need to pray to God to save you.

4. NO EVIDENCE OF A CHANGED LIFE
If there is a failure to follow Christ after your conversion, doubts are more than likely to come.  We are saved by faith alone, not works, but saving faith produces good works (Jas. 2:17).  2 Corinthians 13:5 states it this way, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove (test) your own selves.  Know ye not, your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates (impostors)?"  If you are not following the Lord and His commands, you ought to reexamine your commitment to Christ.

II.  Marks of A Christian
1. YOU WILL HAVE AN INNER DESIRE TO __________ GOD.
"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.  1 John 2:3 (KJV)

2. YOU WILL HAVE A SPECIAL LOVE FOR GOD'S __________.
"We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren."  1 John 3:14

3. YOU WILL HAVE THE __________  __________ INDWELLING YOU.
"And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him.  And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us."  1 John 3:24

4. YOU WILL HAVE A DESIRE TO __________ THE BIBLE.
"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby."  1 Peter 2:2

So, you're probably saying to yourself, "Well, that's all great, but what about my FAILURES?!  Can they separate me from God?"  My friend, only in our fellowship with God, NOT in our relationship with God.

III. Reasons Why My Salvation Is Secure
1. BECAUSE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD IS CONSTANT
Your relationship with God is constant.  It depends upon God;  therefore, it is secure.  Just as you can never sever the blood relationship that exists between a child and his or her parents, the same is true when you become a child of God.  According to John 1:12, "But as many as received him, to them __________ He __________ to become the sons of God."

Your fellowship with God has to do with the "state of your relationship" with God and depends on you.  Your fellowship changes relative to your obedience to God.  The way you renew your fellowship with God is found in 1 John 1:9.

What must you do in order to restore your fellowship with God?  _________________________________________________________

2. BECAUSE OF THE DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION
The Bible doctrine of justification shows us that the believer is secure in his or her relationship with God.

A. Justification means that "God has declared believers righteous because of their faith in Christ."

"But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness."  Romans 4:5 (NASV)

"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ..."  Romans 5:1 (NASV)

B. Justification says that our sins have been covered with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and because of that covering, God will never credit (impute) sin to your soul.

"Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgive, blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not __________ (credit) sin and whose sins are covered."  Romans 4:7b-8

3. BECAUSE GOD TAKES OVER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF KEEPING YOU FROM CONDEMNATION
"Now unto him that is able to keep you from __________, and to present you __________ before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy."  Jude 24
"There is therefore now no __________ to them which are in Christ Jesus..."  Romans 8:1
According to 1 Peter 1:5, our salvation is "__________ by the power of God."
According to John 10:27-29, Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never __________, neither shall any man pluck them out of my __________."

4. BECAUSE OF THE LOVE OF JESUS
CHRIST
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written, 'For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.'  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Romans 8:34-39

A. DEATH...we can't lose it when we __________.
B. LIFE...we can't lose it while we are __________.
C. ANGELS...they can't take it away.
D. PRINCIPALITIES...the government can't take it away.
E. POWERS...the devil can't take it away.
F. THINGS PRESENT...nothing happening right now can take it away.
G. THINGS TO COME...nothing in the __________ can take it away.
H. HEIGHT...nothing above you can take it away.
